Can Sedation Dentistry Make My Lengthy Treatment More Comfortable?
There are many advantages to undergoing multiple treatments during one visit to our Memphis, TN, dental practice. Combining multiple treatments can save you time and money, but the comprehensive approach can require one or more hours of chair time. To help patients relax through lengthy treatments, our dental practice offers multiple forms of sedation dentistry.
At Southern Dental Implant Center, many of our patients report that time goes by faster when undergoing sedation dentistry for multiple treatment appointments. Read on to learn more about the many benefits of sedation dentistry.
Are You a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?
The majority of our patients are excellent candidates for sedation dentistry, especially if they are about to undergo one or more hours of dental work.
During your consultation at our Memphis dental practice, we will review your medical history and ask specific questions to determine if you can safely undergo the comforting effects of sedation.
Women who are pregnant are not candidates for sedation. Certain chronic diseases and types of medication can also be a barrier to candidacy.
What Are My Sedation Options?
If you opt for the relaxing benefits of sedation while undergoing multiple treatments, our office offers two sedation options: oral sedation and IV conscious sedation:
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is administered as a pill. There are many oral sedation options that can place patients in a light, medium, or heavy state of sedation. Oral sedation can take several hours to fully wear off, which is why patients will need to arrange for someone to pick them up after their procedure.
IV Conscious Sedation
IV conscious sedation puts patients into an even deeper state of relaxation. We have a trained team that can administer sedation directly into the bloodstream, resulting in an immediate effect. Like with oral conscious sedation, patients can’t drive themselves home after undergoing treatment with IV sedation.
Benefits of Sedation When Undergoing Multiple Treatments
Whether you are going extensive restorative work or a smile makeover, sedation dentistry can make a lengthy procedure comfortable and relaxing.
Time Goes by Faster
For many patients, sedation affects perception of time. A procedure that requires two hours of chair time can feel like it went by in a fraction of that time.
Improved Patient Comfort
Many patients find sitting still for long periods of time uncomfortable. If you are prone to fidgeting or achy legs, sedation can make lying still more comfortable than it might otherwise be.
Our Dentists Can Work More Efficiently
Finally, sedation has benefits for our doctor. When patients lie still and don’t require multiple breaks, it allows our dental team to work more efficiently while still delivering excellent care.
