Preventive Care
We put a strong emphasis on preventive dental care. After all, keeping your own teeth is the best long-term dental option. And while daily brushing and flossing are excellent for maintaining healthy teeth and gums between office visits, a healthy mouth requires routine general and preventive care from your dentist. At our practice, we offer patients in the Memphis area comprehensive general dentistry and preventive dental care, including routine exams and cleanings, fluoride treatments, and more. Schedule a cleaning at our practice to help keep your smile strong, healthy, and gorgeous!
Periodontal Disease and Gum Health
Periodontal (gum) disease is a serious medical problem that, if left untreated, can result in bone deterioration, tooth loss, and sometimes more serious health consequences. Periodontal disease starts when bacteria found in plaque irritate the gums, causing inflammation. Known as gingivitis in these early stages, the first symptoms of periodontal disease include swollen and bleeding gums. If not treated, the condition can progress, becoming a chronic bacterial infection between the teeth and gums known as periodontitis.
Gum Disease Treatment
Southern Dental Implant Center offers effective techniques to reverse gum disease at our Memphis practice. As part of our general dentistry and preventive care program, we perform thorough gum examinations to determine whether you have periodontal disease so that it can be treated in the early stages, before it causes serious problems. If you do have advanced gum disease, we also offer treatments and restorative dentistry options that can restore health, beauty, and function to your smile.
Bad Breath Treatment
Bad breath, also called halitosis, is more than just a source of potential embarrassment. It may also be the symptom of an underlying health problem. Although bad breath can be caused by eating pungent foods, it is frequently caused by dry mouth condition, poor oral hygiene, or periodontal (gum) disease. Fortunately, there is no need to suffer with chronic bad breath. Our general dentistry department offers effective treatments, such as anti-microbial mouthwash and specialized soft-tissue treatments, to combat bad breath and the conditions that cause it. Let us help you find the cause of your halitosis and develop an effective plan to treat and prevent it.
Root Canal (Endodontic) Treatment
Root canal (endodontic) treatment is an important general dentistry procedure that can save a tooth that is too deeply infected or damaged to be treated by other means. A deep infection is one that has reached the dental pulp at the center of the tooth. This long strand of pulp reaches down into the root and supplies nerves and nutrients to the tooth. If the pulp becomes infected, it can cause a severe toothache and the only way to save the tooth is to perform root canal treatment.
Root canal treatment is performed under anesthesia to ensure your comfort, and involves drilling a small hole into the tooth so that the infected pulp can be removed. A tooth that has undergone root canal treatment becomes weakened, making it vulnerable to further damage unless protected by a restoration. At our Memphis office, we typically place a natural-looking and durable porcelain crown on a tooth after root canal treatment.
TMJ Disorder Treatment
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinged joint which connects the jaw to the skull. When the joint becomes misaligned or damaged, clenching and grinding, particularly during sleep, can occur and cause a variety of symptoms including facial pain, headaches, earaches, and more. If you suffer from excessive teeth grinding, the team at Southern Dental Implant Center can provide solutions for your TMJ disorder, including oral appliances that can relieve stress on the joint while you sleep.
